Aconitum - Monkshood

Upright plants with thick, leathery leaves. Attractive helmet-shaped flowers on tall stalks. Excellent cut flower. Prefers moist, partially shaded areas. Blooms mid to late summer. All plants parts are poisonous. Note: Plant 2 roots per gallon for fuller pots.

Agastache - Anise Hyssop

Aromatic plants that are drought tolerant and heat resistant. Blooms mid to late summer with an exceptionally long bloom time. Requires well-drained soil.

Ajuga - Bugleweed

Rapid growing and easy to maintain. Grows well under trees where other plants may have difficulty. Blue flowers bloom on short spikes in early spring.

Alcea - Hollyhock

Tall stately plants. Mostly biennial or short-lived perennial, mostly re-seeding itself. Plant near the back of the border or along walls or fences. Blooms in summer.

Anemone - Japanese Anemone

Superb perennial for late summer and autumn color. Plants grow best in moist, well-drained soil. Plant in mass near the back of the border for spectacular fall color.

Aquilegia - Columbine

Attractive clumps of delicate foliage with sprays of colorful, nodding flowers. Plants prefer moist, well-drained soil and grow best in partial shade. Columbines are not particularly long-lived, especially if kept too wet. Blooms late spring to early summer.

Astilbe - False Spirea

Astilbe produce large plumes in various sizes and shapes. Each plume consists of hundreds of tiny flowers, each opening in succession, providing a long season of bloom. Plumes make excellent fresh cuts or for drying in natural bouquets. Astilbe grow best in moist soils and semi-shade. Will tolerate more sun with adequate moisture. Excellent for the woodland garden. Plant in mass for a stunning display.

Plant: Plant eyes 1/2" below soil surface and spread fibrous roots throughout soil to facilitate quicker growth. Gently pack soil to reduce air pockets and soil settling.

Grow: Grow cool, 55 - 60F, for best growth. In early spring, and with adequate moisture, Astilbe can be grown in full sun. For late spring and early summer crops when light intensities are high and when temperatures exceed 65 - 70F, it is best to grow Astilbe under 30% shade.

Water: Water immediately and keep Astilbe moist at all times. As shoots and foliage appear, increase water frequency. If pots dry out, the foliage will crinkle and turn brown.

Arendsii Astilbe: This group comprises some of the oldest and original hybridized varieties, yet they remain some of the more popular in production. Generally taller varieties and early blooming, which make them well-suited for larger container production.

Chinensis Astilbe: This group is often the last Astilbe to bloom. Plants are generally more hear and drought tolerant, lending themselves to areas where other Astilbe fair poorly. Foliage is mostly coarsely textured and stems are thick and sturdy. Heights are varied from the shortest to the tallest but flower plumes are mostly narrow and upright.

Japonica: This group generally blooms early and plants are a bit more compact. Foliage is mostly glossy green with pyramidal-shaped flower plumes. Excellent for pot plant production.

Simplicifolia: Slower growing and more compact with glossy foliage. Generally bloom late season with delicate, open panicles. These types will often rebloom.

Bergenia - Pig Squeak

Thick evergreen cabbage-like foliage with burgundy fall, winter, and spring color. Showy flower clusters bloom on heavy stems in mid-spring. Plants prefer moist soil and partial shade, especially in warmer areas. Use as a ground cover, along the edge of a border, or in rock gardens.

Blueberries - Vaccinium

Blueberries are very popular in home gardens because they can grow in a small space, even in containers. Most blueberries will produce a small harvest by their 3rd year, bot won't really begin to produce fully until about their 6th year. Blueberries are a large species of flowering and fruiting shrubs, that are native to North America.

Calla - Zantedeshia

Calla Lilies make excellent pot or patio plants. They also grow well when transplanted into the garden, but are not hardy. Plant in well drained soil and full sun for best growth.

Centaurea - Bachelor's Button

Attractive clump-forming perennials with unusual button-head flowers with large fringed basal bracts. Plants are slightly drought resistant, preferring full sun and well-drained soil. Blooms late spring to mid-summer. Grow best in cool climates.

Chrysanthemum - Hardy Mum

New hardy mums selected for their hardiness and vigor from the University of Minnesota. These mums take several years to reach their mature height and form. Very easy care requiring no pinching, pruning, or deadheading. Requires at least half a day of full sun for best flowering. Heat tolerant also.

Clematis - 

CLEMATIS - 1 year 2.5"pots: These are 1 year old clematis, shipped in 2.5" pots and packed 32/tray. Plants are well-rooted and should be transplanted into gallon pots. This size is heavier than the 50-cell clematis and will have 2-4 eyes per plant. They will finish a gallon quicker and produce fuller looking pots. Plants are shipped dormant. 

Plant: Clematis prefer a neutral soil, pH 5.7 - 6.4. Center in pot and plant crown 1-2" below the soil surface. Spread spiralling roots evenly throughout soil.

Trellis: Position trellis at time of planting to prevent root and stem damage later.

Pinch: Pinch sprouted clematis back to 2 sets of leaf pairs per stem. This will promote better branching and produce fuller containers. Inspect crop regularily and keep growing shoots trained to the trellis to prevent tangling and damage.

Grow: Grow in full sun at 55 - 60F minimum night temperatures. After growth appears, fertilize with 200 ppm Nitrogen every 7 - 10 days.

Water: Keep evenly moist. To prevent diseases, water early in the day and keep foliage dry.

Site Selection & Planting info: For best flowering, select a site that is well-drained with a minimum of 4 hours of sunlight per day. Clematis prefer their roots to be cool. If planted in full sun, surround clematis with perennials or smaller shrubs that provide shade to the crown area. Homeowners should plant their potted clematis so the crown is 2 - 4" below soil level. Keep moist and fertilize regularily.

Coreopsis - Tickseed

Very popular and floriferous genus, providing lots of summer color in the perennial border. Plants prefer full sun and well-drained soil.

Dahlia - 

Dahlias make excellent pot plants and/or patio containers.  They bloom summer till frost, providing that late summer color to the garden when most perennials are past their prime.  Dahlias are also a favorite holiday crop, especially for Easter and Mother's day.

Soil: Use a well-drained potting soil with a pH 6.5 - 7.0

Planting: Plant tubers so the crown is at or just below the soil surface. Eyes should be visible or will develop where the old stem and tubers meet. Be gentle, some tubers are delicate and easily broken if handled too rough.

Watering: Keep pots evenly moist but not too wet after potting. Too much moisture may lead to crown and root rots. Once growth begins, more frequent watering will be necessary.

Temperature: Grow Dahlias warm at 70 - 75F days.

Light: Dahlias require high light intensities, full sun for best growth.

Fertilizer: Dahlias are heavy feeders, especially the tall patio types. Once foliage is present, apply a slow-release top dressing or liquid feed with a well-balanced fertilizer at 200 ppm N.

Plant Growth Regulators: A-rest is effective in controlling height on dahlias. Apply as a drench when shoots are emerging from the soil, usually 2 - 3 weeks after planting.

Pinching: Pinching can help to control height and will produce more bushier plants with more flowers. Pinch early, after 3 - 4 leaf pairs. Pot dahlias do not require any pinching.

Delosperma - Hardy Ice Plant

Succulent-type plants that are generally low-growing and very drought resistant. Plants require well-drained soil and full sun. Use near the front of the border or in rock gardens.

Delphinium - Larkspur

These tall, stately perennials are an old-time favorite but are relatively short-lived. Most prefer cooler climates and well-drained alkaline (add lime) soils. Delphiniums are also heavy feeders and benefit from the addition of humus to the soil. Plants bloom early summer. Taller types have hollow stems and may require stalking to protect from wind and rain. Plant near the back of the border.

Dianthus - Border Carnation

Wonderful mound- or mat-forming plants that have tremendous spring bloom. All require very well-drained soil, full sun, and slightly alkaline (add lime) soil. Use near the front of the border or in rock gardens.

Digitalis - Foxglove

An old-time favorite for the perennial border. Most are biennial but often reseed themselves in the garden. They bloom early summer and grow best in partial shade and in moist, well-drained soil.

Echinacea - Coneflower

Echinacea ( Coneflower ) have always been a mainstay in the sunny perennial garden. Their popularity has skyrocketed in recent years due to intensive breeding programs that have produced fatastic new colors and introduced double and semi-double forms. They are easy to grow and tolerate of a wide range of conditions, including being drought and heat tolerant. Plant in full sun in average soil. Attractive cone heads add winter interest and are good for dried arrangements.

Plant: Center in pot and plant crown at or just below the soil surface. If planting plugs, make sure plug trays have been watered prior to transplanting. This will ensure quicker and more even root penetration into the surrounding new soil. If plugs are root bound, loosen the roots in the lower third of the plug prior to transplanting.

Grow: Grow in full sun at 55 - 60F minimum night temperatures. After growth appears, fertilize with 200 ppm Nitrogen every 7-10 days. Too much fertilizer can lead to root and crown rots.

Lightning: For early spring plantings, Echinacea will finish quicker if grown under long days. Provide supplemental night interruption light for a minimum of 14 hours light

PGR's: Most commercially available plant growth regulators are effective in controlling plant height. Consult label instructions.

Diseases: Mostly susceptible to botrytis, pythium, and aster yellow. Use preventive fungicides and good cultural practices to reduce susceptibility.

Eucomis - Pineapple Lily

Eucomis make excellent pot plants and/or patio containers. They bloom mid-summer with exeptionally long lasting flower stalks resembling a pineapple flower. Plant bulbs just below the soil surface. 1 per 6" pot or 3 per 10" pot, and grow above 60°F night temparatures.

Gaillardia - Blanket Flower

Produces mounds of everblooming flowers. Very heat and drought tolerant. Grows best in full sun in well-drained soil. Use near the front of the border or in rock gardens.

Geranium - Cranesbill

Hardy geraniums are long blooming and adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions. Some have ornamental foliage for additional appeal. Most bloom heavily in late spring to early summer and then periodically throughout the summer. They are easy to grow and maintenance free. Plant in well-drained soil.

Heath & Heathers - Calluna & Erica

Small shrub-like evergreens with very colorful foliage and flowers. These plants require well-drained acidic soil. In more temperate climates, grow in ful sun. In areas with high summer temperatures, provide some filtered sun to keep plants cool and prevent them from drying out. We ship a colorful growers choice at time of shipping

Hemerocallis - Daylily

Extremely popular perennial. Hemerocallis (Daylilies) are adaptable to a wide range of growing conditions and are very easy to grow. Once established, daylilies are very drought and heat tolerant, and are extremely long-lived. Extensive breeding efforts have produced plants of varying heights, flower color, bloom times, and rebloomers. 

NEW 2-FAN SIZE: We have increased our size of most of our daylilies to a 2-fan size. These will increase the numbers of flowers per pot and give you a better spring and summer retail presentation.

DAYLILY TERMINOLOGY

Dormant: Plants are deciduous, completely loosing their foliage. Most dormant types are very hardy but may perform poorly in frost free areas. New growth originates from the formation of new eyes from the crown.

Evergreen: Plants continue to grow in mild climates and foliage does not die back. Best types for extreme southern areas and less hardy in nothern areas. New growth originates from the center of the old foliage.

Semi-Evergreen: Plants exhibiting characteristics of both dormant and evergreen types. Perform equally well in the North and South.

Diploids: Daylilies with 2 sets of chromosomes. Usually faster growing, producing more "grassy" growth and ever-blooming types.

Tetraploids: Daylilies with 4 sets of chromosomes. Usually produces wider and heavier foliage with thick sturdy stems. Flowers are larger with thicker petals, and colors are more intense.

Extended Bloom: Flowers remain open for a minimum of 16 hours, good for evening viewing.

Reblooms: Plants bloom heavily early summer and sporadically thereafter.

Grow: Center and plant so crown is 1" below soil surface. Prune root tips for easier fit. Keep evenly moist and maintain pH 6.2 - 6.7. Grow in full sun at 55 - 60F. Fertilize moderately once growth appears. Most daylilies will flower 10 weeks after planting.

Heuchera - Coral Bells

Heuchera are clumping perennials with very colorful foliage and exquisite spikes of small bell-shaped flowers. Recent breeding efforts have added many new color variations to this genus. All grow well in partial shade and well-drained soil. They tolerate more sun with sufficient moisture. Plants bloom early to mid-summer.

Heucherella - Foamy Bells

Heucherella are a hybrid cross between Heuchera and tiarella, resulting in plants with similar growth and cultural characteristics as their parents. Most produce nice compact mounds with colorful foliage and sprays of tiny flowers in spring. Grow in partial shade in well-drained soil. Excellent for rock gardens or woodland settings.

Hosta - Plantain Lily

Very popular and undemanding perennial. Grown mostly for its decorative foliage, plants remain attractive from spring till frost. Most flower mid-July to early August. Hosta prefer partial shade, although a few will tolerate sun with adequate moisture. Use as a ground cover, for edging, or as an accent plant in the shady border.

NOTE, SIZE: 25 X #1 TC: Look for this size for large bare root hosta grown from certified virus-free tissue culture. These hosta are grown for 2 years without digging and are tested 4 times per year for HVX. The 3rd year these hosta are dug, divided, replanted, and again tested 4 times for HVX. Any lots testing positive for HVX are immediatly destroyed. the 4th year these hosta are dug, graded fo rsize, and packed for export. These hosta are not divided at this time to minimize infection and transference of HVX. This ensures the greatest possibility of receiving a virus-free crop along with realizing the benefits of field grown hosta, i.e. larger roots and more eyes.

Grow: Use well-drained soil with a pH 6.0 - 6.5. Center and plant so crown in 1" below soil surface, leaving developing eyes at or just below the soil surface. Spread roots evenly throughout the soil for faster growth.

Temperatures: Grow at 50F minimum to stimulate growth. If growing outside in early spring, do not allow pots to freeze.

Watering: Allow pots to dry slightly between watering, especially until growth appears.

Fertilizer: Hostas are light to moderate feeders. It is best to incorporate a slow release fertilizer in the soil prior to transplanting. If topdressing is desired, apply to the top of the soil after potting. If foliage is present, careful application must not allow fertilizer to become trapped in the leaf petioles, otherwise some leaf burning may occur.

Shade: Although some varieties are sun tolerant, provide 30% shade for best growth and quality.

Iris - 

Iris Ensata ( Japanese Iris )

Tall clump-forming plants that prefer moist soil. Plants produce huge flat crepe paper-like flowers. Grow in acidic boggy soil near the water's edge.

Iris Siberica ( Siberian Iris )

Tall clumping Iris with narrow upright foliage. Plants grow best in moist acidic soil but also tolerates drier soil. Generally pest free. Blooms early summer. Excellent for vertical effect in the landscape.

Iris Germanica ( Tall Bearded Iris )

Wonderful spring blooming perennials in a wide assortment of colors. Plants prefer slightly alkaline soil. Plant rhizomes near the soil surface. Drought tolerant. Our plugs have multiple eyes and will finish gallons quickly.

LA Hybrid Lily - 

Superior hybrids from crossing L asiatic x L. longiflorum.  Flowers are much larger and more funnel shaped than asiatics.  Flowers are extremely long-lasting.  Thicker petals are more weather resistant.  LA hybrids perennialize well in most areas.  These selections respond well to Sumagic® to control height for pot plants.

Leucanthemum - Shasta Daisy

Wonderful summer-blooming perennials with large daisy flowers. Prefers well-drained soil in the sunny border. Deadhead to encourage continuous bloom.

Lily Looks - 

New generation of pot lilies which are genetically short,  can be grown all year round, and are available in a full range of colors.  In particular, these varieties have been selected for their higher flower production, their reduced sensitivity to leaf scorching and bud abortion, and their shorter forcing periods.  These characteristics make LiLy Looks the ideal pot lily , especially for scheduling multiple crops in spring and throughout the year.  Call for more specific forcing information.

Lobelia - Cardinal Flower

Excellent perennial for late summer bloom. Plants require moist soil and prefer partial afternoon shade. Hummingbirds love these plants.

Lonicera - Honeysuckle

Long-blooming with fragrant flowers all summer. More compact twining growth habit. Requires a support structure.

Lupinus - Lupine

Unsurpassed early summer color with dense spires of pea-shaped flowers. Plants grow best in cooler climates. Deadhead old flowers to promote rebloom.

Nepeta - Catmint

Forms very floriferous clumps that smothers the plant with flowers mid-summer. Cut back after blooming to encourage another flush of flowers. Does well in dry, ordinary soil. Use for edging or near the front of the border.

Oriental Lily - 

Usually tall growing with excetionally large fragrant flowers.  Flowers are mostly outward facing and often have marron spots on the petals.  Perfers warmer temperatures and good drainage (more sand) compared to asiatics.

Papaver - Oriental Poppy

Very hairy basal leaves with huge crepe paper-like flowers on tall stems. Plants bloom late spring and require well-drained soil. Very showy.

Pennisetum - Fountain Grass

Wonderful mounding grass with gracefully arching foliage and stems. Attractive bottlebrush-like flowers bloom late summer. Very floriferous.

Penstemon - Bearded Tongue

Long-blooming summer perennials with tubular flowers. Hummingbirds love these flowers. Plants require well-drained soil. They do not tolerate having wet feet over winter.

Peony - Garden Peony

Peony is a classic perennial with unsurpassed late spring beauty. Peonies are very long-lived and develop large crowns with thick woody roots. Huge fragrant flowers bloom late spring for a spectacular show. Excellent cut flower.

Grow: Use well-drained soil with a pH 6.5-7.0. Center crown with eyes facing up and angle root at 45 towards the bottom edge of the pot

Planting Depth: Plant so eyes are 1-2" below the soil surface. If too shallow, the crown and eyes might dry out when exposed to intense spring sun. Prune root tips if necessary to obtain proper planting depth.

Temperatures: Grow cool at 45-55F until new fibrous roots are visible. Growing too warm too quickly will result in plants developing without a root structure to support it. This may cause plants to wilt or leaves to curl during high spring temps.

Watering: Allow pots to dry slightly between watering. Good drainage is a must.

Fertilizer: Peonies are light feeders and too much Nitrogen may inhibit flowering. Fertilize with 100-150ppm Nitrogen every other watering

Diseases: Botrytis is the primary culprit of buds not opening and turning black. Keep foliage dry during watering, especially during cool weather. Use fungicides to control outbreaks.

Phlox - Garden Phlox

Wonderful clump-forming plants for mid-summer color with exceptional long bloom time. Plant in full sun in areas with good air circulation to prevent mildew.

Prunella - Self Heal

Low growing alpine perennial valued for its medical uses. Tolerates a wide range of soils. Vigorous grower with long season bloom.

Rudbeckia - Black-Eyed Susan

Native and very easy to naturalize. All have yellow daisy like flowers with dark cone-shaped centers. Excellent for mass color display in the sunny border.

Salvia - Meadow Sage

Very floriferous genus for the sunny border. Flowers are long-lasting and plants readily rebloom if deadheaded or if sheared back after flowering. Somewhat drought tolerant.

Scabiosa - Pincushion Flower

Wonderful everblooming plants for the sunny border. Plants require well-drained soil and do not like having wet feet over winter. Very heat tolerant. Excellent for use in containers or near the front of the border.

Sedum - Stonecrop

Very hardy plants with succulent foliage and colorful terminal flower clusters. Most are very heat and drought tolerant, and will grow in almost any soil.

Tricyrtis - Toad Lily

Excellent woodland or shade garden plants. Plants form clumps of tall, gracefully arching, stems with terminal and axillary orchid-like flowers. Plants bloom late summer when other plants are not longer at their peak.

Trumpet Lily - 

Trumpet lilies grow very tall and have large, trumpet-shaped outward-facing flowers.  They are very fragrant.  The immense size and weight of the flowers may require some staking when in bloom.  Trumpet lilies perennialize best in well-drained soil.

Veronica - Speedwell

Summer blooming plants for the sunny border. Most require very little maintenance.
