Vernonia (Ironweed)

Vernonia, a North American prairie native, is a wonderful perennial to have if you want to attract butterflies. The foliage is a common food source for many types of caterpillers and the intense purple flowers in late summer are attractive to adult butterflies. Grow in full sun with good drainage where average to dry soils are found. Will not tolerate heavy or saturated soils.
